Client: CA Fastigheter AB
Location: Karlskrona
Years of commission: 2014-
Type of project: Residential block

Competences: Residential, Interior Design, 3D illustration

At the top of Möllebacken in central Karlskrona, an exclusive building is being erected consisting of 18 beautiful, well planned flats. Nordstjärnan offers a continental living experience and a fantastic view of both the city and the archipelago. Here, we received a fantastic opportunity to focus on quality, through and through. From the inside out.

A landmark on Trossö, with an urban and exclusive feel and high quality materials. CA Fastigheter had a clear vision when they went looking for an architect to take on something as unusual as an entirely new residential complex in the middle of Karlskrona’s old town centre. We immediately loved their attention to details and wanted to create something unique so we were very happy to be awarded the contract. From our office in Kalmar, we were able to efficiently move the work forward through daily contacts.

Special conditions – rational solutions

The project consisted of designing an eight-storey apartment block with eighteen apartments in eight different designs, including a penthouse with a direct entry using a lift. All have views in different directions with large windows, balconies or terraces. The zoning for the sloping plot required a regulated volume and one of the first challenges was to utilise the property as much as possible within the narrow boundaries. We also needed to develop a rational building process since the central and rather cramped position makes specific demands on things such as transports and lead times.

Bricks that can be hung onto the facade

Throughout the design process, we have focused on durable, high-quality materials. Many are traditional but adapted to a modern expression. The facade is clad in glazed, nuanced screen bricks, mounted quickly on hidden rails. The ground floor features granite ceramic, while gold-anodised steel plates cover large parts of the penthouse and roof. Fully glazed balcony railings add another layer of contrast against the brick.

An interior design concept with great care

We have developed the interior design from the planning stage to the final concept. The starting point here has also been the attention to detail and real materials and that the environments should mirror the architecture of the house. Large, open plan areas designed to maximise the intake of light and the view. We have worked hard on the interaction between the different rooms, using few materials selected with care. Buyers of the new flats will have the opportunity to choose between two different interior design concepts. Both have been developed using timeless, tactile materials and an integrated technique.

3D illustrations offer potential buyers a feel for the project

As part of the project, we have created 3D renditions to support the sale of the homes. Our illustrations show Nordstjärnan’s exterior and its place in Karlskrona’s cityscape. They also depict the interiors and design concepts. Take a closer look at Nordstjärnan at nordstjärnan.nu. Moving in date is calculated to be 2017.

Pallas

The new trademark of Borås
Architecture, Urban Development
Idea & Vision, Residential, Retail
Client: BRA Bygg, Järngrinden, Cernera Fastigheter AB
Location: Borås
Years of commission: 2015-2017
Contractor: BRA Bygg
Type of project: Residential block with commercial space
Competences: Residential, Retail

On behalf of the property owners Järngrinden and Cernera, we are developing the block Pallas in central Borås, Sweden, with the intention of integrating the building better into the city. New apartments are being built on the roof, infusing the area with life around the clock. Pallas will be a new trademark for Borås, an excursion in the city.

The vision for the Pallas project is to recreate the benefits of a time when the area was full of optimism and a trust in the future. Therefore, it has been important to convey the design and function in a broader perspective. Architects Alessandro Ripellino developed the concept for Pallas and the team at Tengbom has been working on the construction documents for the project and also on the design of the new Pallas Tower. The original Domus building will be transformed into an attractive, vibrant, open and elegant neighbourhood in the centre of town.

The vision for the Pallas project is to recreate the benefits of a time when the area was full of optimism and a trust in the future.

Homes on the roof and commercial space with a unique Borås identity

The two newly constructed residential storeys are located on top of the existing building with a steep roof which relates to the surrounding buildings. The apartments feature panoramic windows and therefore have a fantastic view of the town’s park and roof scape. The homes on the roof are located around a common green courtyard.

The block also features commercial space mainly on two levels and an indoor car park with approx. 320 spaces. The façades of the building of perforated stainless steel are meant to advertise and distinguish a commercial block with a ‘Borås identity’, at the same time as it is meant to make the parking spaces behind more diffuse. The connection between parking, shopping and living is enhanced and the building will be given new entrances and passages. In the last stage, the 33 storey high Pallas Tower will be constructed.

The Pallas Tower – a signature building in Borås

With its 33 floors, the Pallas Tower will stand as a striking landmark, adding to the ambition of the Pallas project. Architecturally, it blends with the surrounding buildings while still making a bold statement. By building upwards, the project maximises space without encroaching on green areas or other urban spaces. At the same time, it reshapes how both residents and visitors experience Borås. And, of course, future occupants will enjoy an impressive view.

The Psychiatric Building

A vision of transparency and integration
Architecture
Health, Life Science
Client: Landstingsservice i Uppsala
Location: Uppsala
Years of commission: 2008-2012, opened 2013
Area: 34 000 sqm BTA
Type of project: Healthcare building
Competences: Healthcare, Project Management, Interior Design, 3D illustration

Psykiatrins Hus, The Psychiatric Building in Uppsala has been named one of the world’s most architecturally impressive hospitals. We designed it with a clear vision: to create a patient-centred environment that demystifies mental illness. Transparency and integration are at the heart of the design.

In 2007, we won the pre-qualification contest regarding a new building for psychiatric care and research on the campus of the Academic Hospital in central Uppsala. Through the new hospital, the Regional Health Authority wanted to improve the health care processes, create clearer connections with the somatic health care and integrate research and teaching.

Integration for collaboration and better processes

Every floor has wards for research, teaching, in-patient and outpatient care instead of the usual tradition of dividing the disciplines in different buildings. Our architecture helps the operation to develop new forms of collaboration.

“The Psychiatry Building has developed exactly in line with our vision which is fantastic. We have not needed to make any changes between contest entry and realisation, which means that we really have succeeded in creating a healthy environment that encourages integration,” says Jesper Husman, architect in charge.

Light, open environment

Openness was one of our key words throughout the project. The result is a transparent hospital with a common entrance for both the healthcare and the mental health care on one floor, open to the public. Here, there is a restaurant, a library and an auditorium. Around a large, glazed atrium in the heart of the building, the operation takes place in open layouts.

The Psychiatry Building forms a continuous corpus, with light flowing in from the atrium and two smaller courtyards. Outpatient wards face the municipality and its lively surroundings. In-patient wards open toward the castle park, connecting patients to nature and a beautiful view. A rooftop terrace provides a peaceful space for relaxation.

Praised and striking architecture

The ranking placed the Psychiatry Building among the world’s most architecturally impressive hospitals. It ranked ninth on American Online Master of Public Health’s list, The 30 Most Architecturally Impressive Hospitals in the World. The motivation described it as a striking building with a light and positive environment that encourages spontaneous interaction.

“We are incredibly proud and happy that the Psychiatry Building has been ranked so highly by international standards. Sweden is at the forefront when it comes to healthcare architecture, and we have been among the first to put the patient at the centre,” says Christine Hammarling, architect and healthcare specialist at Tengbom.

The World Architecture Festival Award nominated the Psychiatry Building in Uppsala in the Health category. Known as “The World Championship in Architecture,” the award recognises outstanding design worldwide.

Smaragdskolan

A green gem on Öland
Architecture, Interior Design
Education
Client: Mörbylånga Bostads AB
Location: Runsbäck, Färjestaden, Öland
Year of commission: 2014
Contractor: Mörbylånga Bostads AB
Competences: Education
Collaborative Partners: Sweco systems AB, LH ingenjörsbyrå AB, Brand och riskanalys AB, Gröna Rummet Landskapsarkitekter AB, Kreativa Storkök Sverige AB

On the outskirts of Färjestaden, a village with approximately 5,000 inhabitants in Mörbylånga municipality on Öland, we find the new Smaragdskolan. In this place, we have managed to create something special, using only some simple tricks; an environment where the children feel welcome and where the quality radiates from the walls. Literally.

Already from the start, there was a vision to design a school that radiated quality. Smaragdskolan, an F-5 activity for approximately 200 students was to be built in a residential area a little outside of Färjestaden’s centre. Together with our client, Mörbylånga Bostads AB, we started thinking of ideas for the students to long for despite the somewhat peripheral location. The end result is exactly as we intended – both children and grown-ups say that they love the place. The quality using a few simple tricks creates a fine balance.

The facade of high quality pine is Sioo impregnated, a new and environmentally friendly surface treatment that quickly gives the wood a beautiful, light grey colour.

An Öland barn with a modern touch

These simple yet robust agricultural buildings are everywhere on Öland—solid wooden walls and pitched steel roofs. We embraced the traditional design but introduced new ideas. The facade, made of high-quality pine, is treated with Sioo, an eco-friendly finish that quickly gives the wood a light grey tone. Large windows let in plenty of daylight and create a sense of transparency. As a nod to its name, Smaragdskolan also features green accent colours at the entrance and in the stairwells.

Flexible environments with the ability to grow

To make the most of the light, we placed the school yard in a south-westerly direction. The building is L shaped in two volumes with the classrooms facing north in one of the volumes. In the other, there is a studio, a library, dining hall and after school activities, spaces that may also be used by other organisations outside of school hours. To allow the school to grow over time, we have made the preparations for a possible extension and the adding of more learning environments.

The colour scheme was chosen due to research that shows that people find those colours peaceful.

Participation offers identity

But let’s go back to the name. To make students feel involved in the new school, the council arranged a naming competition. The winning entry came from class 5C. Their motivation was simple—the school sits near Smaragdvägen, and “it feels good to go to a school named after something as beautiful as an emerald.” The emerald is also a precious gem symbolising growth, harmony, stability, and stamina. Its green colour represents youth and health.

Transparency against exclusion

As is the case with white and blue, the green colour is repeated in the interior design. The colour scheme was chosen due to research that shows that people find those colours peaceful. Inside the school too, we have selected several sound and robust materials such as limestone and terrazzo. We also placed a great focus on transparency. Glass areas instead of walls give the teachers an overview of the activities and create security for the kids. Open, light surfaces prevent bullying and exclusion.

10 smart sqm

Future living in efficient living space
10 smarta kvadrat 2011
Architecture
Residential
Client: AF Bostäder, Martinsons
Location: Lund, Virserum & Malmö
Years of commission: 2011–2013
Type of project: Student housing
Contractor: Ulestedt
Competences: Residential

Accommodation for students wanting sustainability, low rent and space efficient solutions. That was the challenge we took on in partnership with AF Bostäder. Without compromising on the environmental aspects, the finances or the quality, we developed Bokompakt, 22 turnkey student flats in Lund. The prototype 10 smart sqm is one of the most talked about projects we have ever designed and it still features regularly in media all over the world.

Two projects – one vision

Together with AF Bostäder, we have developed two sister projects that explore and challenge the impressions we have of surface efficient living concepts. One of them, Bokompakt, is today finished student flats in Lund, where the focus is on sustainability and quality in a small space. The 22 homes made from wood, where each resident has 10 sqm, form part of AF Bostäder’s development project for the homes of the future.

10 smart sqm
Photo: Bertil Herzberg

The other project, 10 smart sqm was developed as a first prototype of Bokompakt for the exhibition TRÄ 2013 at Virserum’s art gallery. The prototype was a contribution to the debate about how small a home can be, whether small can still mean quality, whether wood can still look modern, and what an entirely industrial product made from cross-laminated timber could look like. 10 smart sqm was only developed as an exhibition prototype and is not being produced nor is it for sale. But the challenges are still there and we would love to discuss them with you at any time.

Despite the small size, the dwellings have everything a student needs: a mezzanine for sleeping, kitchen, bathroom and even a small area for horticulture with a patio.

From 25 to 10 sqm

Building homes that students can both afford and want to live in requires bold thinking. To optimise living space, we partnered with AF Bostäder and reduced the Bokompakt dwellings from the standard 25 sqm to just 10 sqm. This was made possible when the Land and Environmental Court approved a deviation from Boverket’s building regulations.

Bokompakt was developed in partnership with students and with a constant focus on functionality, safety and quality. Despite the small size, the dwellings have everything a student needs: a mezzanine for sleeping, kitchen, bathroom and even a small area for horticulture with a patio.

Wood – beautiful and environmentally friendly

The prototype 10 smart sqm was constructed from cross-laminated timber – a carbon dioxide neutral and renewable resource. The industrial treatment of the KL wood offers new possibilities for new shapes on doors and windows. The wood is produced locally and is both light and pliable. Industrial construction means shorter construction times, moisture proof manufacturing and a better working environment for the builders. The characteristics of the wood contribute to the environmental impact of the construction sector in a positive direction. In addition, it is a beautiful material that creates a special atmosphere for the residents.

Viral impact

In 2013, 10 smart sqm gained enormous attention when we created a film with young actors to showcase future housing. Local media followed the filming closely, and soon after, the prototype went viral worldwide. In 2014, 10 smart sqm toured Sweden—a journey that ended with it being sold to the highest bidder.

Hötorget Subway Station

A lighter meeting place that is easy to navigate
Hötorget Subway Station
Architecture
Infrastructure
Client: AB Stockholms Lokaltrafik
Location: Stockholm
Years of commission: 2011-2014
Contractor: Structor
Type of project: Subway station
Competences: Infrastructure, Retail

Hötorget Subway Station is one of Stockholm’s oldest stations and it opened in 1952. Our project, which was to develop the station, is part of a larger concept called Mötesplats SL – a long-term investment in more travellers and happier travellers. Several of the busiest tube stations in Stockholm are now being developed into meeting places for both travellers and residents from the surrounding area where you can run your errands in a safe and inviting environment.

Easy to find with a better overview

Are you one of the 30,000 people in Stockholm who pass through Hötorget Subway Station on a daily basis? Then you cannot have missed the transformation that the central ticket hall has undergone during the last few years. We have upgraded the ticket hall for increased comfort and service with a clearer character. Transparency and translucency between shop and the ticket hall, light materials and an airy design creates an inviting, peaceful and pure environment for travellers to spend time in.

Local identity

The biggest challenge, and the most noticeable improvement, is the clearer layout with less visual noise. For those who have struggled to find the right exit, navigating the station is now much easier. Four staircases lead directly to each corner of the Sveavägen–Kungsgatan junction, making it quicker to find the way.

A space both for travellers and local residents

Inside the ticket hall, new shops and restaurants serve travellers, passers-by, and local residents. The Mötesplats SL project sets a clear goal. Each station should strengthen the local identity and contribute to the area’s character.

Avion Shopping

To want to stay
Architecture, Interior Design
Retail
Client: Ikea Centres
Location: Umeå
Years of commission: 2011 - 2016
Contractor: Fastec
Type of project: Shopping mall
Areas of expertise: Retail, Interior Design

Shopping malls play an ever-greater role in our daily lives, in our cities and in our culture. In Umeå, we have designed Avion Shopping, a shopping mall with the ambition that the customers should want to repeat the experience again and again. Welcome.

On behalf of Ikano Retail, who later changed names to Ikea Centres, we designed the mall Avion Shopping in Umeå. The mall is built adjacent to an Ikea store, and the shopping mall in Umeå is one of Ikea Centres’ 58 shopping destinations around Europe.

Photo: Per Ranung

Our architects in charge are Emma Nilsby and Christer Blomqvist. They have the following story to tell:

“We have been involved in the project from the beginning to the end with the exception of the detailed planning. We stayed on as design architects during the construction stage and were even responsible for the interior concepts and the interior design of the public spaces. The concept we went with for the exterior was the feeling of a brilliant and reflecting ice crystal with associations to the location up north.”

The third living room

Avion Shopping is a 34,000 square metre large shopping centre with approximately 90 shops spread over two floors. There are six restaurants and five cafés. The orientation inside the building therefore, has been an important aspect for us, to accompany the visitor and make sure that the visit is a special experience that they would like to repeat. For that reason, we wanted to design the project as ‘the third living room’, after our homes and our workplaces. The mall should be both a meeting place and a destination, and therefore, the function is crucial. One result of this is that there are no dead ends in the mall – visitors are strolling along two oval circuits. This offers two clear lines of sight in the space and contributes to an increased ability to navigate the space.

Material and colours have been left natural, so there is for example a lot of ash on panels and floors. We tried to create a typically Scandinavian feel where the colours of the interiors reflect the seasons.

Not a box

Photo: Emma Nilsby

The exterior looks like a large box, there is no denying it. But we have tried to come away from the convention of the typical box-like architecture that so often dominates commercial projects. We have therefore, in consultation with Ikea Centres, developed a facade with sandwich elements of aluminium, on which we placed an undulating decorative expanded metal. But how can we get away from the ‘box’? Well, by working with trailer lights from above and down behind the facade, we create the impression that the building glitters at night and when the undulating shape is emphasised, it gives a much more three dimensional feel.

“We are happy that we managed to create this special and characterful facade. It was a bit of a risk or maybe a wish from our side but Ikea Centres were positive to it”, says Emma Nilsby.

The final result we reached by making a 1:1-scale model in consultation with the manufacturers.

Trading places are and have historically always been important to us people

Location, location, location

A building where the logistics function as planned and the flow of people works well, the location of the shops follows in a natural way. We have been careful to make sure that every shop is visible and gets the opportunity to express its presence.

“Trading places are and have historically always been important meeting places for us people. In addition, they are often meeting places that we here at Tengbom try to make functional and useful. Moreover, malls are interesting environments for us to design, as they are spaces that everyone has access to but are still not really part of the public space. Therefore, we have started focusing on creating environments where people want to stay and mingle, that offer you excitement as well as playfulness”, says Emma Nilsby.

Väla gård

Eco rated office in historic farm environment
Architecture
Building Preservation & Restoration, Offices
Client: Skanska AB
Location: Helsingborg
Years of commission: 2011-2012
Type of project: Office
Contractor: Skanska Sverige AB
Competences: Office, Sustainability

Väla Gård stands as a beautiful listed granite barn and a landmark at Helsingborg’s main entrance. In 2011, we joined an architecture competition and won the exciting challenge of transforming the rural farm environment into a vibrant workplace and meeting hub with a strong eco profile.

The starting point for the structure and character of the area was to let the stone barn remain the principal building. Through a modern revamp of the barn theme, we were able to create a structure that continues to build on the qualities that are already there in the old buildings and environment.

Interaction with forest and road

The historically interesting environment has largely influenced this project. We have developed the buildings’ location, shape, roof pitches and materials based on existing buildings and their location along an old forest road. The new buildings have been given both a façade and a roof made of black-painted wooden panelling, with integrated solar cells facing south. On the short ends, we have placed a grid of perforated cortén steel plate with a tree motif that interacts with the forest and the extension of the forest road.

Väla gård
Photo: Torben Åndahl

On the short ends, we have placed a grid of perforated cortén steel plate with a tree motif that interacts with the forest and the extension of the forest road.

Transparency and integration

The building’s structure follows a spatial concept with two long volumes framing a central room and foyer. Large windows create transparency towards the beech forest, entrance, and highway. At the same time, cross-views and movement between work zones encourage interaction. The design actively fosters social meetings and collaboration between departments. The buildings match the barn’s roof angle, ridge height, and the width of its wooden wing but have their own architectural identity.

Skanska’s elevated environmental objectives were central to the development of the project which has led to the first office block in Scandinavia with plus energy house standard.

Energy efficient and modern office

Previously, Skanska Helsingborg spread its departments across the city, but now they operate together at Väla Gård. Skanska aimed high with its environmental goals and created Scandinavia’s first office building with plus-energy house standards. Geo energy and 450 m² of solar panels provide heating, cooling, and electricity. Any surplus goes back to the grid. The project also meets key sustainability targets. The team eliminated phase-out substances, avoided landfill waste, and prioritised locally produced materials. They also reduced water consumption and improved accessibility.

Award-winning and sustainable architecture

The office block has reached the highest level within the eco rating system LEED. This is the first project to receive Skanska’s highest “deep green” rating. In 2013, the Solar Awards and Solenergipriset 2013 recognised Väla Gård as a winner. Sweden Green Building Awards selected it as This Year’s Green Building. The World Architecture Festival nominated the project in two categories—Office and New and Old.

Enhörningen

Award-winning living space in Japanese harmony
Architecture, Landscape
Parks, Play & Public Spaces, Residential, Residential environments, Squares & Streets
Client: HSB Göta
Location: Kålgården, Jönköping
Years of commission: 2009-2012
Type of project: Residential block
Competences: Residential

The block Enhörningen, featuring 54 flats and a shop, is the northern section of a square which together with two other blocks frame Jönköping’s newly constructed central park – Aspholmsesplanaden – which runs up to Munksjön and Rocksjöån’s nature preserve.

Key word Japanese harmony

The Japanese word Yasuragi means harmony, and that idea guided the entire design of this block. Our goal was to create a place where city life and tranquillity go hand in hand. To give residents the most peaceful and beautiful views possible, the buildings face the lake and embrace a U-shaped courtyard.

In the yard, Japanese cherries and mountain bamboo grow alongside hops and lavender. Climbers weave through taut wires, forming green portals over the footpaths. Residents and visitors can stroll through sedum-planted areas or pause on the wooden bridge. Social spaces, framed by larch wood, gravel, and stones, invite quiet moments with a friend. All around, the soft murmur of water from the pond completes the atmosphere.

Outstanding architecture!

Enhörningen
Photo: Sten Jansin

The building’s facades feature brick and stucco in calm colours. Lime green glass fronts on the balconies and red entrances add contrast. Bamboo panels enclose the private outdoor spaces. Stairwells open onto the surrounding streets, shaping a dynamic and active streetscape.

Award-winning living spaces

In 2012, the neighbourhood Enhörningen was awarded Jönköping’s Town Construction Price in the category Good living space. The motivation: “With its outstanding architecture and courtyard setting, the buildings in the neighbourhood Enhörningen 1 is a very valuable contribution to good living space in central Jönköping”. Enhörningen also won an award for Best HSB project 2011-2012 with the motivation “A neighbourhood has been created here that contributes to the overall feel of this entire part of town. The strength of the project lies in the creation of volume and the interaction between colour and material on the exterior”.
