Socially sustainable living environments
How do we build cities where people feel safe, included, and a sense of belonging? Through our Socially sustainable living environments methodology, we help municipalities, property owners, and other stakeholders integrate social values into urban development, planning, and design.
The Socially sustainable living environments methodology is based on making social sustainability tangible throughout the entire process – from analysis and dialogue to the completed environment. Through workshops, site analyses, and pilot projects, we identify the social values that already exist in a place and the qualities that need to be strengthened. This may involve safety, health, community, and inclusion.
From social values to physical environments
We work in a value-driven and interdisciplinary way, weaving together architecture, landscape, and social analysis. The method connects social values to concrete indicators in the built environment – such as urban life, mobility, green spaces, residential courtyards, and public meeting places.
By analyzing the needs and rights-based perspectives of different target groups, we create stronger decision-making foundations for long-term urban development. The goal is to create environments that work for more people over time and strengthen the relationship between people and place.
The methodology is used both in strategic phases and in concrete urban development projects. Following analysis, vision development, and strategies, social values are translated into tangible solutions.
In projects such as Trädgårdsgatan in Skellefteå and Orminge centrum in Nacka, we have worked with everything from dialogue processes and site analyses to full-scale prototypes and socially value-creating strategies.
Tools for long-term urban development
Socially sustainable living environment is a working model that helps us and our clients understand how people use and experience their environments. And how architecture and urban development can contribute to a more inclusive society.
