Sustainable by Tengbom
Only the most energy-efficient properties can be classified as sustainable investments under the EU’s new taxonomy. However, all major companies are already required by law to report their climate impact. With Sustainable by Tengbom, property owners gain insight into every sustainability aspect of a project, enhancing its long-term value—without compromising the climate or environment.
Imagine you’re at the start of a project. Sustainability and reuse are integral to the mission, with the intention of creating a solution that’s sustainable in the long term—for the climate, the environment, people, and society. Of course, you also have a budget to adhere to, as well as multiple stakeholders—each with their expectations, requirements, and conditions. The project’s ambitions are high. You’re overwhelmed by sustainability trends but find it hard to choose the most relevant ones for your project. Perhaps you’re worried that an important perspective on sustainability might be overlooked—there are so many. Where do you begin?
Reuse, social values, children, health, safety, and so on. Sustainability has many dimensions. How do you choose?
Sustainable by Tengbom addresses all sustainability perspectives
As architects and societal developers, we wanted to find a tangible yet creative way to support clients in scenarios like these, highlighting all sustainability perspectives that add long-term value to the property, the client, and society. The result is Sustainable by Tengbom, a collaborative tool for addressing sustainability in all types of architectural projects. This tool is grounded in frameworks like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Sweden’s environmental objectives, certification systems, societal requirements, and political decisions.
“The demands on property owners will increase in line with climate goals and new regulations. They will need to work more proactively with resource and climate issues, both in new construction and management. At the same time, they cannot lose focus on other sustainability perspectives—environmental, social, and economic. A property should increase in value over time. Sustainable by Tengbom captures exactly that—the value from an environmental, user, and economic perspective,” says Ivana Kildsgaard, Head of Sustainability at Tengbom.
How does it work?
In a joint workshop, we bring together the project’s stakeholders. Using Sustainable by Tengbom, we create engagement, consensus, and ownership of the project’s sustainability goals. We systematically investigate and identify the key aspects to focus on—those that elevate the project’s value. These include all elements that contribute to a more attractive property, urban development, or interior design.
The project’s conditions are mapped out. What do the municipality, the tenant, the client, and the law say? What can we influence? Based on this groundwork, clear goals are set, followed by prioritized actions. After all, it doesn’t matter how many great ideas you have if you don’t know how to prioritize. Lastly, we explore possible synergies and conflicts.
“Working together with our clients in this way provides clarity and alignment—and it’s fun! We focus on functionality, quality in design, and sustainable solutions. This approach also helps clients maintain the ambitions established at the start of the project—the ones that enhance its value,” says Ivana, who has facilitated several successful workshops.
