Northvolt Ett
Battery-operated future on a massive scaleRapid progress is now being made in the automotive industry. When Northvolt decided to locate its production of lithium-ion batteries for electric cars to Skellefteå, Tengbom was chosen to design the enormous facility. We consider societal benefits and thoughtful design natural parts of the development toward a more sustainable society.
Enormous in size
The first steps have now been taken to establish Northvolt’s primary battery production plant on the outskirts of Skellefteå. The project is a major undertaking, which will see the manufacture of lithium batteries for cars and other industries as part of the new generation of energy. The test lab in Västerås is already operational and large-scale production in “Northvolt Ett” is planned to be up and running in 2021.
This massive project brings with it many architectural challenges. The technology and processes being employed, for instance, are ground-breaking, but the prototypes are yet to be made; the plant’s footprint is larger than Stockholm’s old town and time is short.
Positive impression
The architecture must unite the different spaces in a complete, well-functioning and exciting entity, without being monotonous or clumsy. Just because the factory is not front and center, it does not mean the exterior is unimportant; it will still make a big impression on the natural landscape and must be considered accordingly. The lion’s share of the exterior will be made of wood to harmonize with the surroundings. Other materials will include metal, glass and concrete. Guiding phrases in the design process have included recyclability and durability. Other challenges arise inside the building involving logistics and process flows, as well as creating a pleasant work environment.
“Participating in this paradigm shift is an incredible opportunity”

An assignment that benefits society
Northvolt Ett will have around 3,000 employees, so the factory is bringing many new jobs to the municipality. Tengbom was inspired to accept the assignment because the project offers societal benefits, both socially and as part of the conversion from fossil fuels. Naturally, the client’s concern for a visual experience also contributes to a rewarding partnership. Since everyone wants to jump aboard the battery train right now, flexibility and a high tolerance for stress are also important for finding and modifying solutions quickly. As we know, it takes both a positive and negative charge to create energy that drives development forward.
